In 1983, Kathleen Randall and I founded Gage Design. We rented a small, windowless office in the Pioneer Building on Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square and filled it with two drafting tables and a set of magic markers. Safeco Insurance Company commissioned us to design their corporate magazine and we became a viable business with one paying client. In those days, I was able to make an appointment to show our work with nearly anyone in town and we soon had several projects underway.
By the end of 1987, Gage Design had grown to five designers. In 1989, we made our first computer purchase and life, as we knew it, changed forever. We discarded our T-squares, magic markers and digital innocence. Our drafting tables were placed in storage and we acquired an equipment list that read like something out of a science fiction novel. Then Kathleen Randall moved to New York to go back to school and I became the sole proprietor.
In 1996, we stepped into the Internet by building a website for ourselves. Our clients were impressed and website development soon became a large part of our business. We found that a well-designed message, communicated consistently through printed materials and on the World-Wide-Web, was highly effective. Creating a powerful synergy through image design, print design and website development became our primary focus.
Today, we remain committed to the creation of compelling, visual-communication solutions that are effective, aesthetic and thought provoking. Wherever the future leads, we’ll be there, working hard and smart for our clients.
